I think Donkey Kong 94 is definitely best played on the OG Gameboy. The way you throw Mario around is custom-made for the brick, because those A and B buttons are so satisfying to pummel. It's why I have struggled to enjoy Super Mario Bros. 3 - as the 3DS doesn't capture the original's feeling. Those precise platformers are best played on the original hardware.

I think my Gameboy's buttons were pummelled into unsatisfying clicky buttons, sadly.

That Shrek game looks utterly horrific. Pale

Better than all the rest! Cool

Not something you can necessarily say about The Donkey, as others have mentioned, though the platformers he appears in are often fun affairs (especially more recently). Anyway, I have a not-awkward-at-all Top Twelve. Thumbs Up!

Sequelitis really hits you hard doesn't it Zero? I remember you saying similar stuff about Bravely Second and (along with everyone else who's not me) SMG2. Not saying that's wrong or right, just noticeable.

You can't deny the superior soundtrack though. I'm surprised only myself and Drunka have mentioned it thus far.

I'm voting for my favourites, perhaps, rather than the absolute level best. Most of the time the sequels for the series you mentioned are better but, as they're so similar, they have less impact. The exception to that is actually Bravely Second, which for me fell victim to a couple of guys on the forum hyping it up so much that it couldn't reach my expectations. Embarrassed

As for the DKCR and DKC:TF soundstracks, I agree completely... but had limited time to make the post and make my case for everything.

I've got a suggestion for something and no it's not the best Rad Mobile but a genre or genres as all hallows' eve is coming up what about the simply best Survival Horror or just Horror game.

Now of course people have different opinions what is what genre hence why I said all Horror games then things like FEAR could get a mention, but would some of you say Castlevania is as horror game due the setting or would it be a metroidvania with a horror aesthetic.

Really the games I'm thinking are the likes off Resident Evils, Silent Hills, Clock Tower, Project Zero, Outlast, Dead Space and so on

I'd thought it be a good one as I couldn't really think of a Horror Nintendo game and I think Sonic taught us if we go multi format it has to be soemthing large like a genre.

Drunka's Top Ten Scariest Games

This isn't quite how the thread is supposed to work, but I don't care. I'm bald, I do what I want. These are the 10 6 games which have most scared me, rated in scariness, so placement in the list does not necessarily reflect the game's quality.

6: Dark Souls

Look at that, Drunka's done a list and Dark Souls is on it. At this point, despite the gothic imagery and the obvious horror tropes, the Souls games don't scare me at all. At first though, when I hadn't mastered the combat and every corner hid some terrifying new threat, making any progress at all was incredibly slow. I would barely move an inch without wondering if I should rush back to the bonfire, just to be safe. Would be higher if it weren't for the fact I'm now the don.

5: Resident Evil 4

Not the scariest game ever, or even in the series, but this is the only numbered Resident Evil I've ever completed and it definitely has its scary moments. The panic of dealing with the Ganados is a different kind of fear, rarely matched in any game, and the more traditional use of fear with later monsters worked as well.

4: The Evil Within

A spiritual successor to Resident Evil 4, this has a bad first few chapters and a bad last few chapters but a killer stretch in the middle. Plus, the creepy, surreal atmosphere is a hell of a lot scarier than Umbrella and their shenanigans ever were. Honourable mention to The Last of Us, the other spiritual successor to Resi. The scariest thing in that game was the player, which was a very well handled and interesting concept, but not one for this list.

3: Zombi U

A fairly average survival horror zombie game elevated by clever use of the Wii U's second screen and a Dark Souls-esque death system which made the fear a little more real. The thought of a beloved character being eaten was genuinely scary.
Plus, a terrifying vision of a post-Brexit Britain.

2: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

Another discussion of scary games, another mention of the BEN DROWNED creepypasta. Taking the already creepy atmosphere of Majora's Mask and using it to tell something delightfully creepy, this short story/ video combo really improved the fear factor of the game for me.

1: Pokémon Blue

Because of this. Maybe it's because I was so young, and maybe it's because of how invested and attached I was to the world of Pokémon, but coming to Lavender Town as a kid was terrifying. I couldn't even have the sound on this music was so terrifying. And in a game otherwise just about people with cool monster friend, here was a random part that was genuinely haunted by ghosts.

PostSubject: Re: Simply the Best   Sun 23 Oct 2016 - 16:35

As one of the most scary things ever The Kitchen didn't scare me at all as it was so predictable, that I'm going for quality of the Survival Horror genre which will NOT include Resident Evil 4 and its more action nature.

I'm bringing back a old list from almost 3 years ago which some may have not seen due how long ago it was.

10. Parasite Eve II

A bit of Cult Classic now this Sci Fi Action-RPG Survival Horror from Square which is mainly here just for the bit love it should get.

9. Alan Wake

One of the best original titles for the Xbox 360 in general, the strange ending and stuff continuing in DLC I've not played is why it is in at Number 9.

8. Dino Crisis

Basically this is a not so good Resident Evil with Dinosaurs which should make a come back after the dreadful idea of D3 which was Dinosaurs in Space and making it a OG Xbox exclusive.

7. Deadly Premonition

I bought the game based of Jimmy's review and he was not wrong

6. Silent Hill

Silent Hill took the genre to new places as Resident Evil has been rather B-Movie in story where SH pushed in a more psychological style and was less about the combat and more about what was going on around you.

5. Silent Hill 2

You should have guessed this one was coming seeing SH has already appeared, I may crap on the PS2 a lot but those early years with the likes of Silent Hill 2 and MGS2 made me very happy to own one as they are masterpieces of their time.

4. Resident Evil 3 Nemesis

A lot don't like RE3 as they will say it was rushed out the door and rehashing the world of RE2 which is all true but the tension of walking around a corner and bam Nemesis is there and can kill you in one or two hits, is still great. I wish Capcom would remember RE3 though but statements about being able to play all core RE games on PS4 and RE3 no way playable on the PS4 is just odd.

3. Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

Talking of Cult Classics then this might be more of one then Parasite Eve II due to its poor sales and bad timing coming out near something else and also what other games the Cube got in the genre it is a real shame this doesn't get more love and Nintendo who own the IP doesn't bring it back.

2. REmake

This is what came out near Eternal Darkness and was amazing, to this day on the Cube not a PS4 in HD still looks fantastic and plays how a Survival Horror should.

1. Resident Evil 2

This most obvious number 1 if you know me at all, this game was my childhood and will remain the benchmark for survival horror games to be measured by in my eyes, will the REmake of 2 do the same for this as it did for RE1.

Now as I've put 2 Silent Hills and 3 Resident Evils on the list and if I had to do one per series then I reckon the 3 other games on that list would be Until Dawn yeah it's not  survival horror and more of interactive story which is best on around a teen horror movies in setting that I would allow it (yes I'm allowing this but not RE4 as its my list), Project Zero II: Crimson Butterfly and Haunting Ground both from the PS2.

Likewise.  I think the Luigi's Mansions might be the only "horror" games I've played more than ten minutes of.  I am going to give a top three though.

Yeah, I'm also a wuss. I'm not going to play any of the Amnesia/Outlast/type games, and I'm not humouring games like Five Nights at Freddy's which it just "wait for a loud thing to suddenly appear". So, my list are a list of games that are either spoopy or give you that "not sure I want to see what's round the corner" feeling*:

Excellent Spooks (but primarily "big issues"):
Dark Souls / Dark Souls II: Stealing Drunka's idea, I was often unsure I wanted to know/deal with what was round the next corner. I'd say it counts as a horror game too, as most of your opponents are some kind of undead entity. There's skeletons and "zombies" everywhere.
Resident Evil: Luckily I missed the hammy first attempt, and got to play the Gamecube version (which everyone seemed to have forgotten about when the HD version came out). Yes there was the occasional horror-y thing, but the zombies were scary because they could destroy you (and your progress) in an instant. Despite having played many games with zombie hordes in, the workings of this game stick in my head as a much more "serious thing" than most others.
See also Resident Evil 4

Good Spooks that are actually scary in the traditional sense:
Limbo: What's that thing moving there? Is it going to kill us? Yes. Of course it is.
Luigi's Mansion 2 Dark Moon of the Moon: Great game, and technically "spooky", but only in a cute Nintendo way.

OK Spooks
ZombiU: Not a bad game at all - however it provides some rules and mechanics for its scares, which it then breaks arbitrarily.
But it did predict the end of this London building::

Really old-school bonus points
In the "this thing suddenly appeared" category rather than the ooky-spooky category, a load of old computer games, with no sound, little graphical animation, and gameplay that didn't have the benefit of Japan's instructive hand, could suddenly surprise you. Heavy on the Magick was a good example of this. You'd be standing in a room, silent, nothing happening. There was a "monster incoming!" message, but you had about a second. Then all of a sudden something "enters" through one of the doors and just flattens you. Start again. From the beginning.
Oh, and this bloody thing.

*An aside: why is it that enemies in Dark Souls and Resident Evil, which can total you in two hits, are absolutely devastating, but jumping on a spiny in Super Mario Bros. (which is a one-hit job) is more of a "Doh! Never mind back in" feeling? Is it just atmosphere? Of is it the stakes of what you could lose in the way of progress?

Oh wait, I just forgot - I started Year Walk.  And then didn't play on because it featured a jump scare - and like Jimbob and FNaF, I can't be doing with that cheap nonsense (thus the reminder).  Creepy atmosphere and slow burn for me please.

But it did have this bloody creepy thing:

Started playing two survival horror games - I Am Alive and Dead Space. The former is a bit dreary for my tastes, and the combat is ropey. Dead Space on the other hand, is f'ing great fun. The limb removal system makes encounters even more tense - it's like constantly bumping in to the regenerators in Resi 4 (which are the scariest enemy in that game imo).

Mas, I think I'll pick up Deadly Premonition as I hear great things about it. Technically it's meant to be kinda weak but it has a lot of heart and atmosphere, which can go a long way. Did you complete it?

I've so many games on the go at the moment, it's ridiculous.

@gJones I never did it came out at weird time but I loved what I need and would like to go back to some day, yeah it is technically awful in every way but it knows its bad, which gives the game that heart and soul.
