Rather than type up some reviews (which I did do before my 5 year old closed the browser!) I thought I'd provide shorter snippets from the mag. There was a nice feature on how Nintendo is dumping their GameBoy brand, news on the "Wii channel for original downloadable stuff" and in the spirit of GNamer, a list of the Top Dogs in gaming (starting with Poochy!).

*REVIEWS*

Bingo! (85%+):

Good (70-84%):

Not so bad (50-69%):

Mostly useless (30-49%):

For those interested in what the DS was offering us a decade ago:

Good (70-84%):

Not so bad (50-69%):

The GBA wasn't dead yet:

Bingo! (85%+):

Good (70-84%):

March/April 2007 was a very good month for all Nintendo systems and many of these are cheap. I'll probably pick up Sonic and Kororinpa at the end of the month (already have SSX).

Any interest in this lot?

SSX Blur and Sonic & The Secret Rings are the two games I chose to buy with my Wii back in April 2007, based somewhat on the past form of the series, but mainly because of these reviews. Greener got well excited about Blur IIRC - he did make it sound like the best SSX game ever. Really though, it was probably the worst to date at the time.

They've both got the same first-gen Wii problems, with the unreliable controls. If SSX Blur's controls are awkward though, then Sonic's are diabolical. I think that there's probably a decent game in The Secret Rings somewhere, but I never found it. Those controls go well beyond just being incredibly frustrating (if that makes sense).

Kororinpa is the cock and bollocks though. Breath of the Wild/Super Mario Galaxy/Micro Machines V3 good.

Been hearing Kororinpa chat for a decade now and not picked it up. I'll start keeping my eye open, I reckon.

Personally, I really enjoyed Sonic and the Secret Rings. I was 16/17 and able to spend obscene amounts of time getting my head round games with shit controls, though, so maybe it was rubbish and I just didn't notice. I'll get this issue out from under the bed tomorrow and have a flick through.

I wonder when we'll see them do that for the DS brand? My guess is Christmas.

Awww, I quite liked FFV (though I did play the mobile version). And there are some pretty fine DS games in there, to be sure! Picross is one of the console's finest games. Love

Yeah, you gotta give Kororinpa a go, it fixes some of the problems the Wii Monkey Ball created. Looking forward to digging this issue out!

Okay, so it took me . . . a month, but I've got it out now!

That Kororinpa review is a curious little case study; in how you shouldn't take a score without reading the text, in how value isn't entirely determined by length, and so on. Chrissy clearly loved the game to bits, and though she acknowledged the flaws and reflected them in her score, her writing tells the real story.
Also, Greener bloody loved SSX didn't he? Blimey . . .

KEY GAGS I HAVE ENJOYED SO FAR:

  • Hearing NGamer, 10 years ago, already calling out "visceral" as a lazy way of describing a game.
  • On Godzilla Unleashed: Who managed to leash him in the first place?
  • Ubisoft are releasing info slower than a non-teenage non-mutant non-ninja turtle -- that's a plain turtle. And that's slow.
  • All of Matthew's masterful Hotel Dusk review. The stuff of NGamer legend.
  • Um...% for the stock market game
  • The macabre line about crossing out dead Beatles, which I remember every time I see the Let it Be cover.
