Zelda music is awesome. Rhythm games are fun. Crypt of the Necrodancer was fun (allegedly, I've not played enough of it to make my own mind up!). Why not mash-up all three of those concepts and give it a lick of Nintendo paint and magic?

It looks the business and I'm excited to see how another developer handles the Zelda franchise - it's been a fair wee while since we've had a non-Nintendo developed Zelda title! Here's a look at some more gameplay from a Japanese Nindies special.

It's coming this month, seemingly. Who's in for it?

I'm in for it. It will be the first roguelike I've played, I believe, so either I'll have my worldview changed or I'll be able to despise the genre from a position of experience.

Laughing

I'm still not convinced this is a true roguelike, to be honest. The overworld bits seem to be hand-crafted, at the very least.

Yeah I'm in as well as it looks ace, though Dead cells has it's claws back into me so playing another rogue-like might not be wise.

I've really really loved Crypt of the Necrodancer - I'd go as far to say it would suffer from the levels being "designed" - it's a bit of a surprise each time, and you learn enough about all of the elements to gradually improve each time you play. It's really well-balanced for a randomly-generated thing. Cadence of Hyrule seems to be like a super-DX version of the original, on top of the Zelda bits. Yeah, can't wait. I was probably going to get it anyway, but now I've played the original I'm absolutely 100% in on this.

That's why I think it'll still have the randomly generated element in there with the dungeons themselves. I assume we'll pick up items to traverse to new bits of the overworld or something.

My Switch might get turned on with this coming Thursday but £25 (I think) is a tad pricey

At that kind of price I wanna see a physical version, I'm in no rush though as I've still only played Necrodancer once.

I think I might still bite at that price but it'd be nice if there was a demo to try.

Acht, that's nudged it out of 'impulse buy' territory for me. Still keen, but given my misgivings it might take me a bit longer to pick it up.

Just popped onto the eShop and Necrodancer is 80% off which means it's only £3.59, so that might be an OK way to test the waters for those that are unsure of CoH's price tag.

That's impulse buy territory! Unfortunately it's the inclusion of Rinky Dink that's pushing me over the edge, so not for me; but a great deal for others.

So, I've played about 3 hours of this & I love it! I thought what we said earlier in the thread was correct (random gen for dungeons and a fully designed Hyrule over world) but I had a wee look at someone streaming it and their over world was different to mine.

I have to say it really doesn't feel like it though since it still retains that classic Zelda puzzle and exploration element plus the soundtrack is top notch and should be played for that alone. Thumbs Up!

PostSubject: Re: Cadence of Hyrule   Cadence of Hyrule EmptyFri 14 Jun 2019 - 1:58

I had a wee go on it tonight as well - it's hard as nails so far, but that's because I'm very new to the game. I'm sure I'll be masterfully dancing my way across Hyrule so far.

It's interesting that everybody's overworld is different, but I think simply just having your own overworld being persistent is a great change from Necrodancer. Being able to go back to the same screen to try out a different strategy to take out the enemies is a welcome difference. I think the Zelda spin will keep me engaged in this for a good while.

And the music! I sat for a bit on the title screen to listen to that OoT title screen remix. They've knocked the soundtrack out of the park - I suppose they had to, considering the nature of the game.

To Jas, incredibly early game spoilers:

Reply to Jay's early game spoiler:

---

As far as the difficulty goes it's definitely challenging but once you find a weapon type you're comfortable with (I like the flail at the minute) & get your timing down any deaths that happen after that feel like your own fault rather than the game throwing an unfair situation at you.

There's some good options to tweak as well, but the only thing I changed there was the game over shop (turned it off) as after the first hour or so I noticed equipment/loot can be found quite easily and I was basically wasting crystals on things I can get minutes after restarting .

Sounding good boys but the price for me for a game digital only on Switch is still off-putting. I wonder if we will get a physical version from like a limited run.

All I can say is this is so great that if a physical version does happen I shall be double dipping plus it'd be a good way to offer us the soundtrack.

EDIT: This is such a cool video.

I finished this in the early hours of this morning & I can't stop thinking about it, but maybe you're worried about the price? Understandable as no one wants to drop 20+ quid on an indie and only get a handful hours for their money, my first run through was just a little over 10 hours & if that's all you play I say that's pretty good value. However, I plan to try my hand at the custom mode options so that play time is going to easily shoot through the roof.

Not keen on rogue-likes/lites/proc gen etc? This is the most accessible one I've ever played as the sense of progression happens much much quicker & in a variety of ways too such as seeing how far you explored the map or what weapons/items you have collected plus dying doesn't feel like a massive punishment either, and it has more going on than simply letting an proc gen algorithm do it's thing. The over world puzzles for example are definitely hand crafted you just might not have one of those classic Zelda items that help you solve it - speaking of which this is very much a Zelda game in that you explore, find items that will help with dungeons or combat in general but that combat just happens to be in the Necrodancer style.

For me this is something really really special & you's all need to give it a go.

Shen was more excited about this one than I am, so I think my plan at the moment is to wait until I give her a Switch in a couple of months and experience it mostly through watching her play. Everything y'all are saying sounds great though!

That's good to hear. I reckon I'm gonna hold off on seeing anything else now, though. This is close enough to a new proper Nintendo game that I want to go in pretty fresh!

That's a good idea, I had to hold myself back from posting some music clips in that last post because I think they are just better to experience when you play for the first time.
