Anyway, thought I'd make a thread for video game company promos, as Nintendo have cranked out a couple in the last few days. Here's the latest advert for the Nintendo Switch:



It's a good effort that I think does a convincing job of selling the 'play anywhere, anytime, with anyone' idea. That's more than what can be said about this utter dug meat:

I know it's mean to call kids "wee dicks", but, Cappa, you're absolutely right. It's on par with the "kids love to stay up late!" holiday park thing a few years back. And I couldn't bring myself to click on the WiiU one - brrrrrr...

There was a line in NGamer, maybe even from earlier than that and reprinted in one of the free books, that said the NES' marketing budget was just a man running around Brighton in a red tracksuit saying "games . . . games . . ." under his breath, and that's an image I've never gotten out of my head. Absolute gold.

When we work out which era of Nintendo adverts were the worst, the answer that we will come up with will be "all of them".

Highlights for me are the advert voiceover man having a breakdown saying "SPRINGSPRINGSPRINGSPRING" to mimick the guy chucking shurikens at his TV or the poor lass who was probably paid with a Greggs sausage roll and a discoloured copy of Super Mario Land 2 to say "I want to watch the teevee naooow".

Nice of Brad Pitt to appear in them though eh?

During research for the poorly chosen and awkward first day of Mariopalooza, I came across these two cracking old Donkey Kong ads.

Er... wow.

Thoughts there: 1) that Colecovision port of DK's pretty damn good. 2) That's an elaborate set for the DKJR ad! 3) I miss when Mario had a hat and was from the 1920s.

I want Mario to return to being a literal moustache-twirling villain. Bonus points if he begins his sentences with "nyeeeeeh, y'see..."

I like Monster Hunter. I do not like bad Groundskeeper Willie style Scottish accents.

Therefore, I am conflicted.

However, one specific line in this one (you'll know it) takes us right into fucking brilliant territory again.

I keep finding more. Actually, he's winning me over.

Jings. I'd only ever read about that in magazines. Whoever approved that advert should be cannoned out of a fanny themselves.

I knew what that was gonna be before I clicked, but still enjoyed giving it a watch. That's a pretty good message, to be fair.

I had that banned ad on a promo disc handed out with one of the game magazines back in the day. It'll also had this delight of a promo for Xbox Live on it.

I love this guy's network of world-wide friends and their incredibly stereotypical gamertags.

I'm always amazed they got away with that.

SEGA did loads like that and Sony did at the start of the PS1, wouldn't fly now and likely stuff that started console wars etc

Yep, Nintendo did it back a little but "edgy" has never been their schtick really. I think they look better for it to be honest, it's all a bit cringe when you look back now.

I think this is how to do it. A recognisable, memorable voice that you couldn't mistake, good footage and straight to the point with it's purpose.
