| I can't imagine ever getting myself one, but I can see the logic in this release. The hinge is generally the breaking point for most dead DSs. |

| Phillips has pretty much said what I was going to. Because the 3D effect never took off, there are plenty of people (parents, the 'masses') who will refuse to buy a 3DS because of the branding mistakes Nintendo brought to the table, these people claiming it's just a DS with 3D. 2DS solves this problem.
It's a good idea, but most importantly it's not aimed at us. Reggie (I think) has already specified they are aiming at selling through to 5-6 year olds, so parents will be buying these and will probably choose this over the thousands of DSis that they purchase during the holiday season in North America. This is mainly because of what I mentioned above and how the 3D effect isn't for under 7s (in North America they have a 3D effect warning on the front of every 3DS software case).
This also explains why 2DS isn't launching in Japan. 3DS is already mass market there and their market has seen a transition entirely away from DS back in late 2011. In the west DS still sells in the thousands every year.
Because it's not aimed at us I've been able to overlook everything I'm not a fan of about it. It all works for its intended audience and purpose, and hopefully it does leave the door open for a high end 3DS model next year (think the equivalent of the DSi/DSi XL), given the emphasis on the "3DS family".
Part of me is disappointed, however, to see the 3D effect step back even further. Nintendo stopped using it post price cut in 2011 as a selling point for the 3DS, but it's still a shame for them to lose further confidence in it. |

| I guess the "sleep" button that the console has will solve the puzzle? |

I asked this on Twitter (actually, it was about Phantom Hourglass but it was practically the same puzzle.) Apparently, there's a sleep switch which achieves the same effect. This is not as intuitive but would ultimately perform the same thing. The only puzzle you couldn't solve now would be that one in Another Code which involved reflecting the top screen on the bottom screen in order to locate the position of a bird in a birdcage. |

I honestly don't know what to think, it looks weird for one.
I am actually thinking about getting one purely as a collectors thing as I think it will be one of those weird consoles that will be for ever in Nintendo's history |

| Seems like a good idea to me, removing gimmicks that don't actually change anything to reduce the price seems like a smart move to me. If I didn't already have a 3DS I'd probably consider one, heck I'll probably pick one up when I want a second one at some point. The loss of the gimmicks is minimal as far as I'm concerned, I never use the 3d anyway (tried it several times and I legit cannot see the difference, not to the point it impacts my view on the game at any rate), and while the loss of the folding design initially sounds bad we lived with them pre-GBA SP and those of us with Sony handhelds also live with it now.
And mentioning the GBA SP just brought up some major nostalgia. Anyhow, all up I like this thing, and I might very well pick it up. I also like how it solves the vile d-pad position even more. |

My first thought was along these lines too, but I bet CiNG (Were they still going, anyway) would've worked out a puzzle for a new game that involves the sleep swtich instead. And the puzzle is so famous I reckon anybody playing Hotel Dusk on a 2DS will know already how to do it. |

| If anyone's interested, GAME have some 2DS-specific trade-in offers ahead of it's launch in October:

| I might actually end up importing one of these if they ever release one in Japan.
But I could never see me using one as my main system. I use the 3D too much. |
