It's hard to keep up any sort of fitness regime or diet, so I thought I'd make a feel-good thread for any and all healthy achievements, from walking to work and eating a salad, to running a marathon.

I think the last time I was properly fit was back when I was part of a Uni football team and I'd like to get back to something like that in the long term while supporting my girlfriend with her new fitness regime. We're going to try and do the Nottingham half-marathon in September, but I've always been someone whose had a big idea or goal and then got distracted by something else. I'd like this time to be different though. Falcon Punch

I do just over 8k walking to work everyday, and am lucky enough to work for a University so it's easy for me to access a gym at lunch time or join in the staff sports. I'm going to pick up my membership tomorrow and hopefully do a bigger, faster, move on the reg.

I'm also gradually weening myself off of cheese because I'd like to go Vegan at some point, but for now veggie is fine by me because pizza and the occasional chocolate.

I did try a Pappa John's Vegan "cheese" the other day though and it wasn't the worst thing ever, so who knows.

The lightest I've been in about 15 years was in 2012 when I stuck to the keto diet for about 9 months and also walked for a couple of hours a day between classes and visiting friends in uni. I ought to give that diet another shake of the stick because the reason I put all my weight back on and then some was going back to how I was eating before. What a shocker, right? I don't think that did my mental health any favours either as losing 4 and a half stone and then putting 7 stone back on really did not do wonders for my self esteem.

I don't think I could do vegetarianism or go vegan if I was doing keto again though - at least 85% of what I ate was meat and cheese!

I'm not going to pretend to understand Keto, it seems like a really weird diet to me. But I've heard a few people having some joy with it.

I think there are quite a lot of really nice meat substitutes these days. We use the Linda McCartney range quite often. The duck tastes pretty authentic. Most of the other things, the burgers or the roast dinners, don't taste like the real deal but they're really tasty in their own way and tend to be high in protein.

I've been able to cut milk out of my diet pretty easily... except for things like chocolate or being offered cake.

I'm really going to struggle with any diet, or vegetarianism - The Lady cooking the occasional meat-free meal (which inevitably has something like egg in it) is the closest I get I'm afraid. I'm a very picky eater, and most of the stuff I like is animal-based or carbohydrates. With meat it's more about the texture than anything else, so while I've been told that I'm going to try chickpea burgers I've also been told I probably won't like them.

I do however have something to contribute to this thread however: I've been doing yoga for the past thirteen weeks or so, and given that I loathe any form of physical exercise bar walking that's quite something for me. A good friend recommended me the app. I use (not sure if he'd appreciate me naming him so I won't), which features a wrestler Rolling Eyes and so therefore ought to appeal to some of you fellas. It's called DDP Yoga and I strictly ignore all the nutrition tips that DDP gives in favour of eating more to fill the extra space. Embarrassed

I'm a tad like Jay as at one point I lost a decent amount of weight, I was still a big boy but had shirts in L or XL not like now for instance.

I don't really know what I did last time though, that I've not tried now which has included DDPYoga (I need to give it a go again). Even though according to my phone do 25,000+ steps a day in work, it's work that's also the issue as I'll have two breaks and eat during both along with my biggest issue fizzy as it's easy to pick up a can of monster and a big bag of crisps.

I have been doing a tad better but like tonight the two managers in the team bought a boatload of food.

Don't get me wrong - it's bloody tough to stick to. I genuinely hated having cooked breakfasts every morning towards the end of my time with the diet and found myself missing cereal and toast. Going out to eat with folks is an absolute pain unless you go to steakhouses and whatnot. Drinking is similarly awful in that you can still remain low-carb (which is the crux of the diet) by having spirits and diet mixer, but it's still likely to knock your body out of the fat burning ketosis state or cause it to still.

I suspect that a big part of my success with the diet was more to do with portion control and eating less, but cutting back on carbs can't hurt, I suppose.

Correct! It was me that recommended the app to Balla - I don't mind being named, Balla - and I'm glad with the success he's had with it. I fell out of routine with the yoga app and kept stalling whenever I tried to get back on track with it. It's something I really ought to return to - I'm actually beginning to get muscular and back pain with sitting for most of the day at work, so yoga would not only help me burn some fat but also improve my limberness in general. That's the idea at least - getting into a regular routine to do the sessions is another point entirely.

I just looked up that diet, it makes sense.

Especially for someone like me as I think I eat healthy(ish) like fruit every day (normally a apple or pear) and mainly chicken which is often in pasta or bread.

The cat escaped the bag a bit there anyway. Embarrassed But yep, it's worked really well for me. I'm currently taking a break until I know how much I can cope with on top of the new job, and then I'll get back into it! (My mat is crap though, and my heart monitor doesn't work with the app. Rolling Eyes )

I was going to say how that doesn't sound so bad... then I remembered how the toast under the egg and the hash browns make cooked breakfasts and changed my mind!

I miss cooked breakfasts. Myself and the other foreign teachers at work have been making elaborate plans to construct a full English here in Japan.

To actually get onto the main topic, fitness and diet was always something I struggled to commit to in the UK but that's because I was hella depressed. Now, though, I'm in the best shape of my life.

Part of that is just that Japanese food is healthier and the portions are generally smaller, but a much bigger part is that I've developed a genuine love for hiking, for being outside and walking and exploring. I'll be out and about on my feet for more than 12 hours in a day and enjoying every minute. Just finding a form of exercise which I like has made a huge difference to my fitness creeping up without me noticing.

I first realised how much fitter I was when I went cycling with my pals Andrew and Joe and we'd been going for a good hour and I wasn't in any pain. I suddenly thought to myself "shit, is this what it feels like to be a functional human?"
The next time was when I dragged Shen and a bunch of my friends from the UK up Fushimi Inari shrine in Kyoto. I was running up and down all over the mountain but they complained the whole way up.

And now that I've become a bit more outdoorsy, I've started running again and I don't hate it. I'm even planning to buy a bike soon and enjoy some big long cycles with the boys. I went to Round One and spent as much time on the sports and physical activities as the arcade games.

Sorry, I know this is all a bit like bragging. I guess the advice is to just try to enjoy life more rather than forcing yourself to do exercise you don't like. You scots have nice mountains to hike, right?

I've still got a bit of a belly which kids like to poke and laugh at but I'm on the road to being really happy with my body and my health.

It's borderline impossible to go back to vegetarian here in Japan. You can order the vegetarian option but it'll still have a meat broth, and a little meat for flavouring . . .

@Balla and @Jay, you can't be a real Pokemon fan unless you're full vegan. Sorry, but that's the truth.

I would like to go walking around Japan at some point but I don't think I have the money for me and my partner to go at the moment and I'd want to spend more than just a couple of days there!

I do enjoy walking around places as I find that it helps me process whatever is going through my head. But England is just England to me so a bigger change of scenery would definitely help.

I know that in London we don't really have that option, but it does amaze me how many Londoners go to the gym and personal training and run around London's streets and stuff. I get that you have to do some sort of exercise, especially if you have a sedentary office job, and we don't have great options; but I really don't see how any of that's worth the upside? It all sounds grim!

Mind you, I can't say I find yoga 'fun' either. Instead I take advantage of my hatred of failure and the app.'s tendency to flash up big 'MISSED THIS ONE' messages when I miss a workout.

I played rounders on Thursday for the first time since I was in secondary school. It felt satisfying to hit the ball in the sweet spot. Only problem was I fell over when I was running and landed on my shoulder which I've really buggered up. Laughing

It's not broken or anything but it swelled up a treat.

Yeah, whenever people ask me for advice on what to do in Tokyo/ Kyoto etc I always say to leave one day free to just step outside and get lost.

Same! When it was looking like I'd have to go back, mum tried to cheer me up by saying I could go hiking around Cheltenham as if that wasn't incredibly shite. But I know its just because its normal to me. Japanese folks love the idea of western castles and churches, stained glass windows, and big flat grassy plains because they don't have that stuff. Grass is always greener, and that shite.

BTW, really hope you do get a chance to visit Japan while I'm here. (which if all goes to plan is forever, so it's a pretty wide window)

I've decided to jog too and from work every day this year from now on, which is 5K there and 5K back again.

I think this'll do my mental health some good. I always feel like I need to do more exercise, especially having an office job. But I also don't like how much time a job takes away from doing fun things. I'm in a position now where I might be able to work extra hours while making quite a bit more money than I'm used to, so cutting down a commute and getting fitter sounds like a win/win.

Would like to do a half marathon this year. Possibly the great north run as my girlfriend is from Newcastle so easy for us to stay there for a weekend. We'll see how fit I get.

I've had a very lazy weekend, but I always manage way over 10,000 steps during the working week - it's just that I also spend a lot of time sat down!

I do that at home too which is one of the reasons I'm actually quite interested in the Ring Fit.

According to Pokemon Go, I walked a total of 121 km last week, which is pretty good. I've also been sticking fairly rigidly to hitting the gym every other day or three times a week, and I'm really enjoying lifting heavy things and seeing my muscles grow.

I need to run more, though. Want to lose that belly. I can do a 5k no problem but I need to up it, and I need to stick with it even though its cold and boring and doesn't feel good like the gym kind of pain.

That's a pretty legit distance! I think I'm under 100k per week but I'll try to up it.

Doing the jog as the commute definitely helps take the tedium away a bit.

I can't currently do my DDP Yoga because it's done something horrid to my left quad. Yaaaaaay.

Unrelated to covid, my gym closed for a few months for refurbishment. I told myself I'd eat healthy and run while it was closed, trim some fat, but its been too hot to run mosr days and I like food. It just reopened, and I went for my first return workout this evening . . . My arms are exhausted, I sweat buckets, I'm back on the road. It hurts but it feels gooooood!

Nice one.

I've not really moved much since our lockdown started, but when we moved into our new place we had space for a rowing machine. The first time I tried using it I felt sick but I went again the other day and did 5k over a small session. Trying to hit 10k a day will be my eventual goal. My arms and knees felt it the next day even though I was only going for something like 25 minutes.

I was wanting one of those Ring Fits for ages but they were always out of stock. Don't need one now that they are back.

Had a much better session on the rower yesterday. Back in the before times I used to just wack it on the highest level and go for however long I felt like but I wasn't up to that. Well my latest effort saw me back up there without issue. Didn't go blisteringly fast, but still pretty happy with 6.5k in half an hour.

Set myself a target during the last stretch: get to 6k or half an hour, whatever came first. I reached 6 with about 2 minutes to spare so went absolutely ham for the last 500. Felt good to dust off the cobwebs. Not sure what my fitbit would make of it, in terms of steps. I've not used it since this calamity started but might give it a charge for next time.

When all this is over, my partner and I would like to spend a few weeks in Japan. Maybe I'll be able to keep up with you on one of those herculean hikes Laughing
