Oh my god Despair episode 8 was amazing!!  The prequel is finally cutting to the chase, and things are happening!!  Pretty much no laughs this episode, no, continuing on from episode 7 we're cutting to the very heart of Despair in episode 8!

Super Despair Episode 8 spoilers/thoughts:

I get the feeling some crazy twists are on the horizon given the ending of this episode.  Either way fantastic episode.  I have to say the way these two arcs always carry the other when they're having a dud episode is great!

Is it strange I dig this stuff despite basically being close to suffering Despair Syndrome myself right now?

I think it's crazy that anyone 'digs' this stuff myself! Honestly I come out of most of the Despair Arc episodes feeling at best relieved.  I mean, we know how it ends, and it ain't good.  It does tie into Hope Arc, otherwise I probably wouldn't watch it.

The only little bit of hope to come...:

Spoilers natch:

On an interesting note about Kamukura I've noticed

Spoiler:

Doubt it'll have any impact on the series, but it was something curious I noticed about his choice of actions.  Overall his actions are starting to make me doubt if he

Rewatched Side Future's first episode again to see if I could pick anything up.  Short answer?  I think I might have done just that.

Side Future EP 1 spoiler and possible mastermind spoiler theory:

Going to watch the other seven episodes tomorrow between packing to see if there's anything else that strikes me as suspicious.

HAHAHAHAHAAAAAA... Things are officially interesting now. Do we know how many episodes remain?

Also, Blacksmith and Confectioner confirmed for worst characters (outside of racial stereotype).

About to watch episode nine, hype reaching maximum levels! Episode count is 12 for each arc, so after ep nine we've got three more to go.

On my theory (since I'm waiting for buffering), I'd just like to add that

Spoiler:

And with that it's time to jump in to episode 8 before hitting the new episode 9!

F***********************************************************************!

Spoiler:

Also screencapped those forbidden actions.  Interesting, if you know who isn't the traitor I'll be even more surprised than I was going in to this week.

Other episode 9 stuff:

Slight revising of my theory right now

Spoiler:

So Balla, what do you make of all this carnage? Got any theories about where this is all headed?

AAAAAAHAHAHAHAAAAAA

Nah no theories. I sort of like yours because of the scene at the beginning of episode 1, Despair Arc - but I'm not going to make any assumptions. Happy to be surprised.

How can you laugh so heartlessly at that latest death!  Crying or Very sad

This arc should be the one titled despair, it's all that it's imparted to the viewer so far!

I did wonder about that... but a couple haven't quite matched up. And knowing DR3 it's just doing that to screw with the viewer, so...

True, very very true.

Speaking of screwing with the viewer, it just occurred to me
Spoiler:

I now see why Kodaka wants us to watch these series alternating, the trolling possibilities are endless!

As an aside I've been rewatching Death Note the past week, good fun.  Light's demented god complex is always fun to watch, especially in the last arc where we see the descent.

Also been reading a bit of Pokemon Adventures ruby and sapphire, only halfway through the first volume but it's tons of fun.  Cute, amusing, and basically everything the anime wishes it could be.  I absolutely love the quirky personalities the trainers of hoenn were given, one a contest fanatic determined to win every contest in hoenn (to the point he'll run away from home to do it!) and the other a battle hungry wild thing determined to conquer the league!

They've even made walley a decent character!  Shocked

It's early days yet but so far I have to give this series a massive recommendation to anyone that likes Pokemon and enjoys cute fun quirky stories!

About Jabberwock, I've been seeing some ideas around the place that I completely agree with that

Possible spoilers if the theory is true:

I wouldn't rule out the idea that person I mentioned earlier being the mastermind just yet however!

Spoiler:

Either way Despair 9 is going to be veeery interesting this week, odds are we'll get some clues one way or the other on a number of these theories!

Well that wasn't highly disturbing to watch, nope, not at all!  I can't believe I'm saying this but a certian someone dying would've been less disturbing.

Despair 9 spoilers:

Another top class, if extremely disturbing, episode!

OH, OH! Just realized something!

...I'm done.  For a given value of 'done', anyway.  I didn't watch the last episode, and I think I'll be getting an informed opinion before I watch the next (Despair) one.

The DR games are dark, sure.  They revolve around kids murdering each other.  But there's a hero making sure that justice is done nonetheless.  And it's all off-screen murder, it's not torture, or... that other thing you described.

Even reading about what happened made me feel kinda unwell.  No anime, no matter how grand, is worth sitting through that for.

I'll still follow the story so I know what's going on in the Hope arc, otherwise I'd be very happy to leave the Despair arc entirely.

Aww, don't you want to go to the same warm fuzzy place she's in though!  She looks like she's having so much fun!

Spoiler:

To be fair on Despair this isn't the first time torture has come up, case five of dr2 made it pretty clear the "victim" died in extreme agony, and very slowly.  Plus this was more emotional torture than physical torture well outside Mukuro tinkering with chisa's brain to accelerate the process anyway.  That was fun.

There are people out for justice, it's just that this being a prequel they're going to lose (or in some cases have already lost), but likely set events in motion that allow the victories and challenges we know come to pass eventuate in the future.  Plus we knew this one was going to be a super dark affair from the outset solely based on what danganronpa 2 told us happened.

DR2 spoilers:

Actually for a while I was worried Despair wasn't going to marry up as well with danganronpa 2 continuity wise as it now is, it wasn't nearly dark enough for it to fit with what we were told. Now everything is clicking in to place. It's also sorting out some gripes I had with both the previous games too, like Junko leading to the end of the world purely because of her acting qualities.

I'd say the brutality has a point.  We the viewers are supposed to go through the despair the cast are, so we can fully appreciate the end result of the series climax.  We were told to watch both series in a specific order after all, so I strongly believe all this will have some kind of emotional payoff later.

Besides seeing Junko be Junko is super fun!

That's the other thing. If I knew it was leading to a happy ending, like DR3Hope surely is (surely?), like the other DR games have been, I'd feel happier watching it. But I'm not putting myself through all this stuff for the 'payoff' of an unhappy ending. (Also I feel minimal sympathy for that DR2 victim, for hopefully obvious reasons. And it all happened off-screen.)

Actually a not too uncommon line of thought is that the fall to Despair is going to end in episode 11, Future concludes its story in episode 12, and episode 12 of Despair will be something else (perhaps Makoto scooping up the class?) for a "hopeful" ending akin to the two main games endings.  Wouldn't surprise me either given where episode 9 ended, I can't feel this taking up the next three episodes given the events of last minute or so.

Or this being Danganronpa it could have some absolutely insane twist like the final episode of Despair actually concluding Future's story somehow.

Despair 1 and 9 spoilers:

Don't get me wrong it's your call whether you continue or not, but if I might make a suggestion?  With the two shows being three weeks from concluding would it perhaps be worth considering putting both on hold until Despair 12 is out and we know if it ends despairfully or hopefully?  With the creator saying the best watching order is alternating between the two and this being Danganronpa I can't help but feel Despair as a whole is going to be an integral part of Future.  Not to mention even in episode 9 we're still getting the backstory of the characters in Future (boxing dude for example, despair 9 is still filling his backstory in).

Also just to be clear the spoilered image isn't from the brainwash scene or anything, in case you suspect it was.

Hmm, maybe. You'd not be able to sextuple post though, you know that. Tongue Anyway I ain't watching Despair 9 regardless, I know what happens in it already and it sounds horrific.

Honestly the disturbing stuff took about three minutes overall, there's a lot more in there than the brainwash.  Most of it was Junko confronting people (boxing dude v Junko hype!) and the moons aligning themselves for the final fall.

Either way I'll give you a short sharp thorough rundown of what went down just in case you missed something.

Ep 9 in bullet point form:

Whether you choose to hold off on watching more Danganronpa or not that should leave you with everything needed from episode nine.  In hindsight the disturbing stuff was an incredibly small portion of the episode, although it was highly disturbing and I can't say you'd be amiss skipping it if you don't like or can't stand that sort of thing.  I will say though that it was refreshing for this sort of thing to be shown as the truly horrifying and disturbing atrocity it was rather than the anime norm where it gets fitishized up.  I don't normally go nuts over fanservice, I've become inured to it over the years, but one thing that always grinds my gears is when a character getting broken gets turned in some sick fetish fuel, so I'll give the show credit for not going that route.

#itseemsitwasdenial

On the bright side Despair 9 had immediate emotional payoff which was nice, they've been pretty consistent in tying the emotional events of Despair with the following Future episode whenever they've done backstory for the Future characters and it's good to see this continued.  But without further ado, onwards to super spoiler town for whenever Balla starts to watch the series again!

FUTURE 10 SUPER SPOILERS, like seriously don't open this till you see the episode, so worth waiting:

Highlight of the episode was definitely

F10:

Roll on to Despair 10!  I'm not sure whether I'm absolutely terrified of what awaits in it or excited to see what they pull next.  Probably both.
