I will mention that you say nothing about the use of standard-issue Mario characters and Koopalings, and barely touch on the overuse of the generic Toad. This has been one of my biggest issues in Mario RPGs since I got bored with Dream Team Bros.. A penny for your thoughts?

The game had bigger flaws, to be honest. On a personal note it doesn't bother me that you're talking to Toad after Toad after Toad - they differentiate themselves through their chat or actions rather than their appearance (though it is interesting that black Toads were tried out as concept art but not implemented in the game). The Koopalings get fleshed out a bit, but not enough for all of them to be truly distinct from the others.

On the flipside, I don't care so much for one-off or the RPG series characters (Fawful the exception, natch). I found myself going "Who are you?" when Broque Monsieur turned up in DTB. Essentially, they're catering for the elderly like myself.

That's a very interesting starting point Drunka. I've heard of this game through LKD, and read her review: I knew nothing more about it. It's very very very much not my cup of tea, but if the aim of these is to make us consider games we'd not have thought of otherwise, you've blown the competition away.

Well I certainly didn't expect that, Drunka. I'm still a bit as I think there's a fine line between discussing that sort of thing properly and *smooth saxophone*, having read some of the pages of vndb.org before, but I learned a lot there. Balla, I'm glad you liked that game (I'm trying to avoid spoilers here!) but I still feel that I'm going to spend too long looking at the screen with those things; I love the characters though, and I'm glad that series has found its form. Mas, you didn't have to sell me on that game anyway - it may well have been my choice had I played it myself! Instead I watched my mum get through it somehow; it really is one of a kind in terms of cinematic cleverness.

No longer than you'd have spent with the characters first time around, I'd say! It's much more streamlined these days.

And I thought that last paragraph was clever! (claps Jimbob on shoulder in jocular manner, but has limited control over limbs so probably hits him too hard, then spends rest of evening apologising)

Especially taking note of Jay's 'sound' review: very very different for my own, which is all part of the fun, natch. If I can't hum a tune I'm not interested in a game's sound design.

I think for a multiplayer shooter, the sound design needs to be on point - knowing where the enemy is and what they're doing without seeing them as a huge strategic advantage.

I've enjoyed reading everyone's articles - surprised to see Papes topping your list, Zero, but I do remember you raving about it in the thread.

Got some catch up reading to do it seems!
