On first watch it seemed really good: typical Doctor Who Christmas cheese. It might be difficult for parents of children who still believe in Father Christmas to explain what was going on (scratch that: it might be difficult enough to explain what was going on, full stop! InSanttion, anyone?), but, y'know, ambitious, if a little obvious at times.

BUMP!

First episode of a new season, and that's definitely one of the good uns. Decent share of humour and drama. Oh goodness the drama.

Also, presumably you've all seen the news that

That was a quality episode. Had me hooked from the moment the kiddy said his name. Didn't expect a decent Dalek story so soon!

noooos:

Yup, I enjoyed that, although...

Zero's Magician Chat:

It still really bothers me that the BBC ident at the start features a Dalek firing from the eye stalk.

The 2-parter concludes.

Think we agreed that anyone entering the thread has to be up to date, didn't we?  So no spoilers required for previous episodes.

Another good one, I agree.  I did like the screwdriver though. Sad

Also: sudden out-of-nowhere season plot hook? "The hybrid"... Has Mas been giving them ideas?

Gosh, Water on Mars. There was a terror. Pale I remember the girl sobbing as the water flooded over her. Dark and depressing stuff.

And therefore good! I still enjoyed this episode, though: more so when Alpha Prick was swiftly killed off. Best thing about it was sign-language person in charge. Yay inclusion! Grin

Water on Mars was a good'n but so was this. I also had no idea it was a two parter so the ending caught me off guard.

Must admit, as soon as they started talking about the ghost in the water, I knew exactly who it would be... But I still really enjoyed the episode! I'm just worried that the explanation behind the ghosts will be terrible: The Empty Child went from being utterly terrifying to faintly ridiculous when explained.

I liked empty child's explanation because it was well set up. My least favourite thing in Doctor Who is when the end is pulled out of their ass.

It was well set-up, I just didn't like it! It's often hard to resolve the supernatural in a non-supernatural way in a way that's not disappointing. They had the same problem with the smilers in the space whale episode.

For the record, m'lud, The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances are my favourite Ninth Doctor episodes by miles. Thumbs Up!

I'd put Dalek above them, but they take a comfortable second place.

So, Before the Flood... it was alright. I liked the bootstrap paradox stuff at the bookends, I liked the guitar intro, but the bulk of it was pretty much generic Who. Not bad, not great, just... alright.

Next week though: Vikings! And Arya! Yay!

I can't be sure how keen I am on them pointing out that there was what I perceive to be a flaw in the writing at the beginning of the episode... apart from the gloriously silly thing they did for the titles, I almost completely switched off. No

Maybe I'm just getting less picky, but I liked it. Aww! Apart from the romance nonsense at the end. The deaf girl's a great character.

I'm still really enjoying this series and that's a surprise as I was kind of on the edge of just giving it up.

Was that... another two-parter? I can't quite tell.

Anyway, the series continues its good run. This was one of my less preferred episodes this season (mostly due to the sentimental nonsense at the end), and I still really enjoyed it.

It seems like it, aye. I was quite fond of that, to be honest - it was a fairly average episode until the end (remember that I like the mushy stuff). Looking forward to next time!

For me, this was probably the best of the season so far. It got the balance between drama and fun right, it featured a cool new alien (that looked like it belongs in a 90s FPS) and it was a self-contained little story which leads naturally into a follow-up episode. Just what I'm after from Who.

Ack. Slightly limp compared to last week, I thought, treading over ground that the Doctor Who of the last ten years has done many, many times. Although I like Rufus Hound, he seemed a strange fit for the role. Having said that, I like the idea that Ashildr may return...

I didn't dislike that one, but the ending was so quick I think I got whiplash. Ashildir was suddenly back to her nice self, the villain went from roaring in triumph to killed by his mates in what felt like less than a second, and everyone was off for a pint. Feels like this story needed to be a proper two-parter, one season removed at least from last week's episode.
