| Well, it finally happened. After 153 million units sold, today's financial report predicts ZERO hardware sales of the DS next year. That can only mean one thing. Goodnight, sweet prince. |

| If they'd just kept going and sold a couple million more, they could have beaten the PS2. |

| Would they be able to? I've not kept up with hardware sales for ages - has the DS still been consistently selling? |

| The end of an era.
Good move, though. DS still seems to be selling on recognition alone in the US (especially during the holiday season where they sell a fair amount), whereas sales seem to be dead in Japan (and I think) Europe. Without DS around it should also remove consumer confusion between the two.
I think DS recently outsold the PS2 last Winter. |

| Seeing as I called the end of the DS two years ago, when the 3DS was new, I think it's done pretty well! Certainly better than the "drop it and run" Wii. How many big releases have there been for the console in the last two years, though? B2W2, Layton 4...? What was my favourite console ever is long due its rest. It's done excellently, both in the games department and in the "why change the name from Game Boy?" department. Nintendo's first real strike at proving that more power wasn't the only way forward. And Meteos is still criminally underplayed. Now, who wants to do a big DS voting thread? |

Joking aside, I reckon this would be a fine idea to take up after the Wii voting thread reaches its conclusion. http://forums.computerandvideogames.com/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=124092 My top ten would definitely be different now. |

| Reading through that reminded of the range of titles available for the DS - it really was a stellar console. I'd love to go through its catalogue of games genre by genre like we're doing with Wii to pick out the cream of the crop. |

I'm starting to build up my collection as I've had some absolutely stonking DS bargains as of late, like Puzzle League DS for £4, Phantom Hourglass for £6, Chrono Trigger for £8 and Pokémon Conquest for £10. It's a brilliant time to be a DS gamer, and a brilliant time to be celebrating it. |

| DS has had an amazing run. Probably one that handheld consoles will never experience again. |

| An undeniably amazing piece of kit that changed what gaming was for me. Previously I'd concentrated far more on the home console side of things; now I play my handhelds far more than either the Wii or the Wii U. And what games it had! Thanks for the memories and the memories yet to come (there are 4 DS games in my collection that I have yet to finish!). |

| Had the smartphone revolution not had happened I'm sure DS would still be going strong today, just like the GBA was (let's be honest, there hasn't been any software of note released on DS in a year!), particularly in terms of new software.
Though it'd probably have meant 3DS's biggest threat would have been the DS.
That's what I like about Nintendo's handhelds, though: they've always had strong third party support which never tailed off once their respective lifespans were over. |

| I think that's because in handheld consoles, Nintendo has always been the final word. |

| We've come a long way since March 2005, when I stood in ASDA on a pissing-down-with-rain Monday, deciding whether I should spend my £29.99 on my fourth DS game: Spider-Man 2 or The Urbz: Sims in the City. |

I remember sitting in the corner of the living room, happily playing DS and ignoring Comic Relief and drinking copious ammounts of Dr. Pepper while my parents acted a little annoyed because they didn't realise quite how much I was planning to buy. And I remember me and my mate at school on Pictochat walking further and further away from eachother and sending insults, to see how far it would stretch. And I remember sitting in French lessons with another friend, surreptitiously playing Wario ware and hoping not to get spotted. Ah, good memories. |

| Genuinely curious here - who experienced the horrible fate of having the top screen come off its hinges? |

| That'll be me! My DS Lite (I think) screen ended up held to the bottom part only by the wires. |

Same thing happened to me. I bought a new DS Lite though and it's been a-okay. I wonder if this screen splitting catastrophe has befallen more DS Lites than Phats? |

Hinge problems were a design flaw of DS Lite in particular. It was also possible to crack the casing by pushing the screen beyond its natural open position repeatedly over time. Up to now, though, fortunately I've avoided killing a DS. Though I do have a lot of them and rotate the active console regularly. DSi XL = The best. |

| The only time I managed to ruin a DS was my infamous toilet incident, makes gaming on the loo that bit less pleasant. |

| My original DS feel out of my pocket in a restaurant and I broke a home, so I sent that to Nintendo and got a new one. Then I later upgraded to a DS lite and the hinge on that broke all by itself. So I sent that that of and got another one of them. And eventually I switched to DSi then 3DS. So I'm on my sixth machine... |

| I really wish that I had upgraded to a DS Lite a lot sooner. I'd have got a lot more play out of the DS had I owned a version better than the rubbish-in-hindsight Phat from launch day 2005. I only picked up a silver Lite a month or so before the 3DS game out, as HMV had a trade-in offer that meant I'd make money on my Lite purchase, and I got a few games chucked in for free (which paid for a second 3DS game). Great console.
Oh, and by the way: I bought neither! Close call though! |
