I can't believe I'm saying this but I'm legitimately considering not buying this now, enough with the f******* third party characters already!      

I've said this morning on twitter this is silly, as I can't see how you can justify him even just a trophy. Jas did bring up the point it might of been part of the original legends deal / mario costumes in that.

C'mon now that's a bit drastic, that's just a trophy after all and there is only 3 third party characters so would a fourth be that bad?

I don't actually think it will be Rayman. I don't think they'd spoil the announcement ahead of time. And there's no other Ubisoft character I can see it being. It could of course be another company's character.

I hope it's another Pokémon.

I was talking just about 3rd party fighters, as I said on twitter that Rayman trophy reveal probably confirms him as not being a fighter as why would they spoil their own reveal? The fact its a 4 person fighter it makes sense to have that number of characters from a series or in this case band together 4 third party characters.

(side note: Yes, I know not all of the roster works like this.)

He's saying that three third-party characters is the optimal number to give rise to the most iconic showdown... I think.

I think that the Rayman trophy reveal took place today of all days is just to throw people off the scent. I'm thinking it'll be one of those names leaked the other day (from Xenoblade, I think I read).

You said 4 person fighter and have 4 3rd party characters, which I gather we would pick and fight with but I'm saying you don't need some 4th like Rayman as you have Mario and it be more iconic to see him battle sonic, mega and paccers.

Or what Balla said unless we get bomberman.

The game's entire premise is about nintendo fanservice, not third party fanservice.  There is literally not a single viable reason why there should be a fourth third party character in the game.  Sonic had the epic rivalry with Mario, megaman has the nintendo heritage, and pacman as much as I hate the inclusion at least can boast he was one of the original video game characters that helped spawn the industry and thus has the right to hang with characters like mario.  

If this ends up being just a trophy then no harm and it's water under the bridge, but if this is preluding yet another third party character, and one with pretty much no major tie to nintendo at that, then I will have no desire to even play the game.  While we're including rayman we might as well include spyro the dragon to represent skylanders too.

ahh I see it all depends on who the reveal is though and if its even going to be a third party character.

I think things have changed since brawl though where its more video game fan service than just all about Nintendo, you see this a lot with indies having nods to other games in their titles or have bonus indie characters to unlock its a celebration of games as a whole.

I've said before on here (I think) that its just a way for Mr Sakurai/Nintendo to celebrate the industry, the fact the game has brothers in the title is very apt & having a handful doesn't dilute the Nintendo fan service either.

Going to have to disagree with you there, if it was primarily about the industry in general the game would not have placed the extreme emphasis on nintendo at basically every public announcement.  Heck pacman didn't even get mentioned during Nintendo's main event, sonic didn't even get a presentation, and megaman was part of the general reveal alongside the game itself and a couple of other newcomers.  

Besides, you can have nods to the industry while not whoring the game out, of course that could be all this is so I'm just going to stop ranting now and wait and see who the newcomer is.

Genuine point to Jas now - your point in favour of Pac-Man is that he's iconic as heck.  Do you think Rayman is iconic enough, though?  I wouldn't have thought he's anywhere near the same level of icon-ness as MM, Sonic or his Pacness.

(Realise this is me "stepping into the debate", but it is at least a different angle from "I say Nintendo/you say videogames", which I've done to death.)
