I don't actually think I've ever beaten them with Solaire. This isn't me trying to make a humble brag, but I find him to be more of a hindrance than a help. I was struggling with the big boys on my Switch playthrough so I tried to summon Sunbro but he would get killed by the giants before the boss room, he'd get stuck on doors, and on the rare occasions he made it to the party he would die early on and I'd be left with some bosses with extra health to deal with.

Yeah, I gave up trying to be human for the sake of his "help" - it doesn't really work summoning him there, as, even if you clear the path for him, possibly knackering yourself slightly in the first place, he dawdles along like a bellend. Again (and I worry that I'm doing this to be overly-critical of a game that is held up on a pedestal; see also Shadow of the Colossus) I'd argue that it's not a great bit of design. I will try and save him when I start DS again, mind!

I guess I just gut gud at the pre bert and ernie bit too the point where I could escort the sunny chummy in unscathed. He'd also act at a cool distraction at the start, and that's all I felt I needed him for. It's weird but I came so close to soloing ant and Dec but I always bottled it somehow. I guess the Monday morning takeaway is ding fight them on tilt

The rest of Sen's Fortress once I reached the bonfire wasn't too bad. I didn't die to any of the mobs around here, but that giant lobbing firebombs who respawns can fuck off. The Iron Golem... man, I fluked my way through this one. I died about six times just because he kept knocking me off the edge, so I tried to see if there were any NPC summon signs around. Lo and behold, there was. Some Knight Tarkus or something... anyway, he's my second favourite NPC now (the first is because of something that happened later) as whilst I was rolling around the golem's feet like a fool, he lured it to the edge, staggered it then booted it off the building. Is... is that meant to happen? Or did I just luck out? In any case, he saved my hide.
Off to Anor Londo, and the opening area wasn't too bad - although I've no clue what the massive painting is for, I'll probably wiki it later. However, those archers were brutal. I think died about a dozen times around there just because they hit me right before I got to them. Not pleasant. Eventually I lucked my way past them, and entered the keep. Is it just me or is the entirety of Anor Londo a PVP zone? Every time I went human in here I got invaded within five minutes. After clearing out the rooms of their loot, I got into the room with the fog door.
Now, I won't lie - I knew what lay beyond there for me. It's difficult not to - Smough and Ornstein are probably the most infamous bosses in Dark Souls. Videos and horror stories of fighting them are everywhere when you're looking up information about the game. Jaster had posted about them in the boss thread too. It was actually Jaster's tweet where he talked about how elated he was after beating them that convinced me to install the game. I had no qualms about dying to these guys. I'd noticed a summon sign for Knight Solaire whilst I was human and exploring the keep so I'd entered this room human. Then, "you are being invaded". I panicked. I summoned Solaire, thinking I could fight this guy. But then I spotted him, with some sort of crazy looking sword in Havel's Armor. He was waiting for me down by the giants. I panicked more, and ended up sprinting past the invader and the giants into the boss room... for the very first time.
I couldn't believe it when Solaire joined me - I thought he'd die to the giants outside. And man alive did he help me out. Instead of the fight being one big clusterfuck, he lured Ornstein to one end of the room, allowing me to take on Smough. I lucked out as Smough just kept repeating his ground pound, allowing me to run and score a few hits, roll out and rinse and repeat. And with both me and Solaire alive, the second phase of the fight begun.
Solaire, again, helped so much here. He allowed me to both learn Super Ornstein's attacks and get him down to about two thirds of his health. Eventually, Solaire was vanquished, but he did his job. After a hairy battle with loads of close calls including me surviving being impaled with a sliver of health, I beat Ornstein and Smough... on my first attempt. I lucked out hard on those two bosses, and if it weren't for Tarkus and Solaire, there would have been no chance of me winning. But I'm chuffed to bits I managed it. Grin
I had the proper O+S experience when I replayed the game on PS3, to be fair.  |

| Yeah, look for a sewer-like tunnel first before exploring the rest of the swamp area.
Have you been to Darkroot Gardens? You should have some lovely moss to help with the effects of the swamp. |

| I've now finished with that ghastly swamp for good and have breached Sen's fortress, featuring big nasty lizard men. I think it's safe to say any initial grievances I had with this game have subsided and I am really enjoying it at this point  |

| I found blight town a breeze... But that's because I got annoyed with the game long before I ended reached Blighty. I only went back to the game after Drunks kept telling me to git gd in real (for like a good six months)' Souls is a bit like driving: once you master the clutch you get it. By the time I reached Blighty, I was prepared and methodical and didn't need any guides. Sounds like Duck's gut gd with the clutch.  |

| I've got my own clutch sorted again now... but not the indicators, as once again I used my free starting item in a "wrong button" press. Plus I played against morning light, not being able to see the screen properly, so if anything I'm more hardcore than anyone  |

| You need to pick the Pendant to unlock the secret ending - it's the only starting item that matters. |

| I had a bit of a panic when I started the game - I couldn't remember whether - Spoiler:
that pendant was the useless one. I guess it's not exactly, but...
I'm trying hard this time to - Spoiler:
do the thing where you save Solaire, so I went for a couple of humanities - I'm desperately trying to hang on to my "number in the top left" - you know the one. I also chose twin humanities for that reason, knowing full well that, having reached Blighttown, I'm about to fall down many times.

Sure enough, although I've picked off the bosses on the second try this time round, I have started to fail miserably, and eventually in Blighttown I lost my stored up humanity-o-meter. I did actually get to Spideyboobs Jr. with 28 humanities in my inventory - I've never seen the left-hand digit of that counter not be 0! But I need a couple more, and since then I've not been able to get more than 1. I rage-quit after running past the bonfire in Sen's Fortress and getting killed by the giant, so I might just go and do that now.

| There's a bunch of rats under the bridge with the dragon leading up to the Undead Parish. I think there's a bonfire close by too for easy respawning of those rat boys too. |

got a 30th Humanity and deposited it. I'm now at Anor Londo, and spent a good minute outside the Ornstein and Smough Door. I've got it down to "and Smough" after a couple of goes, but this is still silly. Look, I love this game, but that's a bad difficulty spike.

| Yeah, I do think it's a massive difficulty spike, but I suppose the good thing is that there's nothing harder than that for the rest of the game. If you can beat them, you can finish the game. |

| See, I'll agree that it's a difficulty spike but the thing is . . . I love it! I genuinely love that fight, getting it just right, learning the timing when to dodge when to attack, the spectacle of it, everything. I beat them solo every time and it's the pinnacle of my run. |
