Dragon Quest VIII (Not Long To W-VIII)

It's a 3DS JRPG.  Of course I'm interested.  More details later - anyone else thinking of picking this up?  Anyone else not played it before, you horde of filthy multi-format gamers?

Is this coming over though? Everything I've heard has Square not being interested in bringing it over. That said chalk me in the interested group, I'm always up for another 3ds rpg!

Yeah will this even come out over here, aren't we still waiting on some other Dragon Quest games but as translation already done for VIII. Does make it more likely, if it does come ill buy as I've not played as it was on PS2.

If it comes out over here, sure, as I loved it on PS2, but considering we didn't get the DQ7 3DS port... I'm not hopeful.

But we got DQIX, and BD sold well enough over here...

This is actually one of the games that made me take a swipe at square enix in the e3 thread (well, this and bravely second) when it comes to predictions, although I'm hopeful!

I loved this game on the PS2, I love the Dragon Quest series, easily in my top 5 series of all time, and I would buy this in a heartbeat - an absolute must. Now I just have to hope it gets a release.

I remember playing the demo back on PS2 and really enjoying it, so I'd definitely be interested in picking this up.

My major rpg question: have they overhauled the battle system and can I defend myself from being hit?

Let's get VII before VIII. I feel it's very unfair of Square Enix to get me hooked on the Dragon Quest series with its DS output and then not bother with the 3DS follow-ups.

I like the look of this, I was originally expecting the worst, as initial screenshots of the overworld made it seem more similar to the version TOSE ported to Unity for smartphones, than the PS2 original. There is noticeably less fauna in the forest areas, and it just seemed less luscious in general.

But having seen this trailer, I'm quite excited. Yes, the visuals are less detailed, but it looks like they've made the right cuts, and it looks like fits the 3DS well. They've also sped up the turn speeds and there are monsters on the overworld, so it does look more populated despite the evident loss of trees.

I'm just hoping all the little details make it in, like how the towns look at night, and the moving sun across the sky -- something that always reminded me of 3D Zelda. TOSE took them out for the iOS/Android port, though I suspect that was more to do with fitting the game into 1.6GB of space. Or they were being lazy.

One thing I forgot to mention is while there are less trees on 3DS, they actually added a load of grass tufts in the overworld. It's nothing like Xenoblade, but it's nice they actually bothered!

Also: no 3D support. That's a bit of a big loss, I think 3D transforms games like this.

I would buy the PS2 game first and try it out before having this just to get the feel if it's any good, it's one of those games you even like it or hate it so not going to judge until I get a taste of it.

So this was a no-show at E3. Tsk tsk, Square Enix. Dragon Quest Heroes is coming to PS4 (but not PS3) in the west, but not this or Theatrhythm Dragon Quest. Okay...

Or Dragon Quest X.. I mean what's been happening with that? Is it still so popular that you won't sell anymore square?

Indeed. All this talk about how Bravely Default's success in the west will change their culture of western releases feels like hot air to me.

They said there not bringing to PS3 as it's basically pointless in simple terms as you just have to look at the sales numbers, hence why Zestria is getting a PS4 port as that's where games sale now thankfully Namco is still bringing that to PS3.

Playstation 3 is no longer being unused, a lot of people still prefer to keep it, using it and wait for more games on the PS4 like myself with different types of games in a year or two. Only hardcore playstation fans, game console fans or friends muli-player would get it so far. It will have it's time to shine but not yet.

Well that's Square reason behind no DQ:H on PS3 in the west and if you look at PS3 games sales figures of recent titles you can't blame them.

Oh, I know why, just thought I'd mention it.

PS3 has had a faster-than-expected decline for Sony, almost matching PS4's faster-than-expected rise in sales. It makes sense to drop PS3 versions in the west for that reason, as more PS3 owners have upgraded to the PS4 than Xbox 360 owners have the Xbox One.

I still respect Atlus for keeping the PS3 version of Persona 5 around, though.

We don't if PS3 version of that is coming to the west.

I'm more shocked Yakzuka 5 is still coming and just PS3.

And Sony reckon that half of PS4 owners were 360 owners whom aren't of course buying PS3 things.

But we are going of the topic of DQ on 3DS.

Yuji Horii, the creator of Dragon Quest, revealed that Square Enix is “thinking about” localizing Dragon Quest VII and Dragon Quest VIII for 3DS.

Also that XI is a traditional home console game, so likely PS4.

That seems like a bit of a non-story to me.  Don't tease us about it, Horii, just flaming do it!

A Square Enix rep said they didn't intend to announce it at this time, so it looks like Horii ran his mouth. Not that I'm complaining, it's about time Dragon Quest received some more love outside of spin-offs. No Theatrhythm Dragon Quest though

Oh, and DQXI will be on home consoles and not be an MMORPG...I'm guessing that means PS3 and PS4, unless Nintendo has some kind of deal -- Wii U has still sold more than the PS4 to date, but third parties still seem largely uninterested.

I'd rather DQXI target 3DS, mainly because Dragon Quest has always been about inclusion. In chase for profits Square Enix made DQX an MMO, which, while on Wii, largely went under the radar for most since the MMO is an exclusive genre.

I can only see XI being PS4 maybe PS3 at a push but just look at the titles Square have coming to the PS4. Okay in Japan making for Wii U night be fine but if they want to release globally then I think PS4 is the only way to go.

PS4 just doesn't have the install base in Japan though. You can see this in effect with nearly every major Japanese game being on PS3 or Vita as well as PS4, where the PS3 is still the lead platform.

The new Atelier game is coming to PS4 as well as PS3 (and Vita), all screenshots and video footage shown so far are from the PS3 version. Same goes for Star Ocean 5 and Persona 5.

I agree that it'll be PS4-only globally, though.
